Isakson Statement on Sudan Referendum
Feb 07, 2011
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., today issued the following statement in response to the formal announcement of the results of the Southern Sudan referendum. The people of Southern Sudan overwhelmingly voted to become an independent nation.
Isakson, who is the ranking Republican on the African Affairs Subcommittee of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, traveled to Sudan in 2009.
“I’m pleased that the people of Southern Sudan have spoken, and I appreciate the Khartoum government in the North for allowing free and peaceful elections of self-determination,” said Isakson. “It is important that the government in Southern Sudan and the Khartoum government work together to fully implement the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and on other issues facing both parties. Having been in the Sudan and having met leaders from both the North and the South, I am happy this milestone was reached and I hope they can work together to peacefully coexist.”
