Isakson Qualifies for Re-Election to U.S. Senate
Apr 26, 2010
ATLANTA – Surrounded by his family and over 200 supporters, U.S. Senator and Senate candidate Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., today officially qualified as a candidate for re-election to the U.S. Senate in 2010 at the Georgia State Capitol.
“This election is about what direction we take this country. I have nine grandchildren, and this election is about the future we will leave for our grandchildren,” said Isakson, who was surrounded by seven of his nine grandchildren. “The United States is facing skyrocketing deficits, historic debt, out-of-control spending, tax increases on Middle America, regulatory overkill and a tragically flawed government takeover of health care. We are at a critical point in our nation’s history, and I want to return to Washington to fight for what’s right for Georgia’s families and businesses.”
Isakson has been traveling the state for the past five-and-a-half years listening to the concerns of Georgia’s families and small businesses to ensure his votes in the Senate have reflected their conservative values.
Isakson, who has been campaigning for over a year, has raised over $7 million for his re-election and expects to have about $5 million cash on hand at the end of April.
Isakson has built his campaign infrastructure and grassroots support by organizing in all 159 Georgia counties over the past year. It is the same strategy he used in 2004 when he won the election to the U.S. Senate with more votes than any candidate had ever received up to that point in the state of Georgia.
U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss, Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue and former U.S. Senator and former Governor Zell Miller offered strong endorsements for Isakson’s re-election.
“As you know, Johnny and I have been friends for many, many years,” said Chambliss. “Whether it comes to fighting for tax breaks for hardworking Americans, voting to help businesses create jobs or introducing legislation to balance the budget, he has proven to be a strong advocate for Georgia’s conservative values in Washington. I have the utmost respect for Johnny and can think of no one more qualified to represent Georgia in the United States Senate. I’m proud to support him through this process.”
“Johnny has done an outstanding job serving Georgia as United States Senator. He has served with principle, focused on policy and has fought vigorously for our state’s interests in Washington,” said Perdue. “With questionable policies coming out of our nation’s capital and hints that more are on the way, it is vital that Johnny continues as our go to guy in Washington.”
Miller, who appointed Isakson as chairman of the state school board in 1996, said, “We need to send Johnny Isakson back to the United States Senate in November. More than ever before, Georgia needs Johnny’s strong, conservative voice of reason to represent us up there.”
